Challenges of daily life and staying focused on building a business

Staying focused when many challenges present themselves has been around as long as we humans have been. I opened my business 20 years ago and I have seen many challenges over the years; from extreme weather, bursting pipes in my building, economic downturns, family emergencies, but recently I have been really challenged. I am a licensed massage therapist and a few years ago I realized I could not physically do massage any more, the part of my business I truly love, due to advancing peripheral neuropathy, which my doctor believes was caused by my Agent Orange exposure in Vietnam. After I came to terms with that, I had to just focus on the other aspects of running the business. As a small business owner we wear many hats and I just had to remove that hat but I still had many hats on my head! Then this past November my general manager, who also doubles as my daughter, was diagnosed with incurable stage 4 metastatic colon cancer which is now in her liver. Talk about hard to stay focused on the business after that news!! But through all of this I am not ignoring what is going on, but I am working hard to stay focused on running the business knowing that many people are counting on me to make the right decisions at the right times.

Here are a few tips that help me stay focused:

Attitude

Attitude is a choice and I choose to have a positive and upbeat attitude everyday. I do not look at life through rose-colored glasses, but my cup is always half full! Sometimes it is hard to do, but I always look for the positive in any situation.

Motivation

Staying motivated is sometimes tough, but I watch inspirational and motivational videos daily. I always look for a quote that will motivate me.

Learning

I am constantly reading about better ways to build a successful business and to better myself. Plus I watch educational seminars on a daily basis. I am currently reading a book by Tony Robbins and watching a seminar by Jim Rohn—two of the great teachers.

Being Thankful

I wake up everyday with a thankful heart. I count my many blessings and realize that I am too blessed to be stressed.

Giving/Helping

I am always looking for ways to help others through our clothing, food and toy drives and promoting others in their businesses. I am always willing to share with anyone who asks me.

Prayer/Meditation

We all need quiet, reflective time of introspection and prayer and this is a daily routine for me. A day without prayer is a day without sunshine for me. Knowing that God has my back gets me through the toughest times!!

Humor

Humor is all around us and we need to just let it in…and then share that humor with others. If I can put a smile on someone’s face, then I realize that it is a good day regardless of what is going on around me. So laugh, watch a fun movie and tell some jokes—even if they are bad jokes, which I am told I am good at telling!
